Please note that The Bug was making knitting motions with his hands as he said this.
Interesting, I said. The mailman doesn't usually talk much, just delivers the mail and leaves.
No Mommy, you're such a great knitter and the mailman will say... And on and on, with his most charming smile.
So I thanked the boy for the compliment and asked him if he wanted me to knit him something. I've been trying to get him to choose something from New Knits on the Block, like maybe the felted firefighter's hat, or the superhero cape. Hell, I'd offer to make him the mermaid outfit if I wasn't so lazy. I just know I'd never have time to finish it.
But no. My child wants none of those things. He says Make a skirt.
This is not unprecedented. He has asked for a skirt before. He has "made" himself skirts from blankets and sheets and the knotted wad of yarn that is wrapped around the knitting needles in his toy box.
Really? A skirt?
Nooo, he says, thinking, revising. A... tutu.
To dance!
A knitted tutu? The short man certainly has his own sense of style...
Also because I'm lazy, I love that toe ups don't require swatching for gauge. You just cast on and start increasing, and when it fits your toes snugly, you start on the foot.

This will be going to my new neice, Larkyn Noelle, who is eight days old today. (The background is the girly new outfit that will be going with the hat.)
I admit, I didn't use the recommended yarn, or the right needle size. The yarn is Rowan cotton, one strand of green and two strands of yellow held together, and if I'm remembering right, I used size 11 dpns. It came out in a perfect newborn size.
The leaves were sort of what I could do with the leftover yarn, since this was a stashbuster project, and there was no yellow left at all. I like 'em.
